Use the energy of spring to clear physical, mental and energetic clutter, reconnect with yourself and create space for new beginnings.
Spring is such an amazing turning point in the year. As we come out of the hibernation of winter and feel the newness of life all around us, we are reminded that spring holds the energy of renewal and is therefore a sacred promise of a new beginning awaiting us. But the question becomes is there enough space for this new beginning to take root? Or do we need to consider that it’s time to ‘clear’ some space?
As we feel the impulse to do a deep spring clean of our physical space, to take inventory and to purge what we know is no longer supporting us or bringing us joy, we become aware of how the external clutter we are living in can often reflect a deeper sense of internal heaviness and clutter that we may be carrying on a physical, mental, emotional and energetic level.
This becomes an opening, an opportunity to ask ourselves:
Why am I hanging on to this? Am I ready to let it go?
As we work through the physical spring clean of our environment, we are able to observe the inner patterns that may be coming up. The teachings of yoga provide wisdom and insight on how to navigate this inner spring clean with the teaching of saucha, to have an attitude of cleanliness and purity, and aparigraha, to practise non-hoarding and non-attachment.
Whatever is reflected in our outer environment is a mirror to what is also being reflected in our inner environment, showing us where purification and non-attachment are needed physically, mentally, emotionally and energetically.
Creating Space for a New Beginning
Spring naturally encourages us to look at what has accumulated over the winter months. We might clear out cupboards, re-organise our homes, donate clothes we no longer wear or simply create more open, peaceful spaces around us.
But what about the things we cannot see?
We can carry clutter internally as well in the form of our old outdated stories, limiting beliefs, emotional patterns, buried resentment, grievances, and habits. These can remain long after we have outgrown them and can begin to create an internal toxic buildup within our energetic system.
So, as we navigate letting go of physical items, we can observe our tendency to cling to and hang on to things that are no longer needed or that no longer serve us. We can begin observing our patterns of attachment and clinging.
Perhaps spring offers us the opportunity to ask a bigger question:
How do we want to give both our home and our mind and energy a fresh start?
Preparing Your Inner Garden
We can think of it a bit like preparing your garden for spring.
You take time to clear away old debris and prepare the soil so it is ready to plant seeds for a future harvest. We are called to attend to our garden in a conscious way – clearing any weeds that pop up, ensuring there is sufficient water and sunlight to give our seeds the greatest chance to grow and to thrive.
We can use this as a metaphor for our inner garden and how we need to tend to the inner soil of our being.
Are there weeds that are taking over – the outdated stories and patterns – that need to be consciously removed so they are no longer competing for the energy available?
Are there parts of ourselves that need more nourishment, rest, attention or care?
And what new intentions would we like to plant?
If we can prepare our inner soil consciously, we ensure the seeds of intention we plant for ourselves will also have the best opportunity to grow and thrive.
This is where our yoga practice can become a powerful tool for reflection and renewal. Rather than simply moving the body, we can use our practice to become more aware of what we are carrying, where we may be feeling stuck and what we are ready to release.
Spring Clean Your Soul: A Seven-Chakra Detox
Our chakras are energetic centres and, over time, these centres can accumulate heavy vibrations and stagnation, resulting in blocked and unbalanced energy.
When our chakras are blocked, our whole being can feel completely out of sorts and out of alignment, like we are not able to flow with the universal current.
Spring is a perfect time to give our energetic body a deep cleanse and detox.
Working with the chakras can provide a framework for turning our attention inward and becoming more conscious of the different areas of our lives that may need greater awareness, balance and nourishment.
Rather than seeing a spring clean as something that only applies to our physical surroundings, we can use this seasonal transition as an invitation to check in with our whole being.
What are we ready to release?
Where are we feeling stagnant?
What needs to be replenished?
What intentions are we ready to plant for the season ahead?
If our energetic system is feeling in balance and revitalised, it impacts all other parts of our being, bringing everything more deeply into alignment – our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies.
This might be the most important spring clean you choose to do this year.
Moving Beyond a Quick Reset
While a quick reset is wonderful, a deep alignment takes practice to transform old energetic habits that are draining your life force.
True transformation isn’t necessarily about making dramatic changes overnight. It can begin with small, conscious practices that allow us to become aware of what we are carrying and gently create space for something new.
Our yoga practice can support this process by giving us time to slow down, listen inwardly and reconnect with ourselves. Through movement, breath, mantra, meditation, self-inquiry and rest, we can begin to bring awareness to the places where we feel stuck and cultivate greater balance.
Spring reminds us that growth is a process. The garden doesn’t bloom all at once. First, the soil needs to be prepared. The weeds need to be cleared. The seeds need to be planted and then patiently nurtured.
The same can be true for us.
As we clear what is no longer serving us, we create the space to welcome new intentions, new energy and new possibilities.
If you are ready to deep clean your energetic body and get your life force flowing again, don’t miss the opportunity this spring to join in to my upcoming 7 Week Chakra Journey and replenish your whole energetic system.
